The Indian Army has recently conducted successful trials of the indigenous Rudrastra UAV, a hybrid Vertical Take-Off and Landing (VTOL) drone developed by Solar Defence and Aerospace Limited (SDAL). The tests, held on June 11, 2025, at the Pokhran Firing Range in Rajasthan, showcased the drone's advanced capabilities in precision strikes and surveillance 

Key Features and Performance

• VTOL Capability: Rudrastra can take off and land vertically, eliminating the need for runways and enabling operations in confined or rugged terrains. 
• Extended Range and Endurance: The UAV demonstrated a mission radius exceeding 50 kilometers, with an operational range surpassing 170 kilometers. It maintained real-time video feed for approximately 1.5 hours, indicating its potential for prolonged surveillance and strike missions
• Precision Strike: Equipped with an 8 kg precision-guided anti-personnel warhead, Rudrastra executed an airburst detonation at low altitude, effectively neutralizing enemy targets over a wide area. 
• Autonomous Operation: The drone's autonomous return-to-base feature ensures safe recovery after mission completion, enhancing operational efficiency and reducing risks to personnel.

Strategic Implications

The successful trials of Rudrastra mark a significant advancement in India's defense capabilities, aligning with the "Aatmanirbhar Bharat" initiative aimed at fostering self-reliance in defense technology.
